The Short Long Earth

Chapter Six

Critical. Cynical. Satirical.

Pratchett Place, 2011[]

Dear Stephen,

What the fuck?

That was literally the worst chapter I've ever read. YOU CANNOT KILL THE MAIN CHARACTER TO MAKE A POINT, HOWEVER POLITICAL SAID POINT IS. IMAGINE IF WE COMPLETELY RUSHED THE ENDING AND BLEW UP MADISON TO MAKE A POINT ABOUT TERRORISM! HOW FUCKING STUPID WOULD THAT BE?

My chapter attached,

Terry

Chapter Six

Jim Russo had a mission.

Today, in this irrelevant chapter that features none of the main characters and adds hardly anything to the plot, Jim Russo would be really stupid.

Jim had travelled to California, taking maps and equipment and, for some reason, photos. Or, as a 38-year-old apparently calls them, 'photographs'. LOL.

At Sutter's Mill, the historical site where James Marshall had first seen gold flakes, Jim stepped west.

On West 1, the reconstruction was gone, replaced by the wild. And some tourists and plaques.

Jim stepped all the way to West 5. There, he was alone.

Apart from the big ass mill and forge FILLED WITH PEOPLE that he didn't even notice. YOU BROUGHT PHOTOS AND YOU DIDN'T EVEN BRING YOUR GLASSES???

Anyway, Jim wanted to find the exact same gold flake Marshall had found on Datum Earth in 1848. He saw no flaws in this plan, even though it was over 160 years since that gold flake had existed, if it had existed at all on this Earth.

But then there was laughter.

"Not another one?" said a woman, who Jim could only describe as attractive.

"Looks like it," said a man, who Jim could only descibe as an asshole.

"Gold isn't worth it's weight in gold any more!" said the woman, who had appeared intelligent until this. GOLD IS ALWAYS WORTH IT'S WEIGHT IN GOLD.

Mac, a total hypocrite, continued to piss Jim off by making him look like a complete idiot.

And Jim, his life plans ruined, swung some punches and left.
