“I grew up hearing it, when I started to step for myself. The Silence, I called it. The song of the Long Earth itself - the song behind all the songs, the song behind the call of the birds and the rush of the wind.”
   — Joshua Valienté

The Silence is a calmness, a distant, deep presence behind the clutter of worlds.[1]

It is drowned by human presence and seems to be perceived only by Joshua Valienté. It is believed that the conditions surrounding his birth are the reason why he is able to sense it. Thanks of his unique ability, Joshua was able to sense the approach of First Person Singular.
